When a Child Falls Ill
The purpose of this study is to investigate the families’ perspectives on how the healthcare and social welfare system fulfils the welfare state’s promise to act as a safety net in a situation where a child falls seriously ill. The study recognises the different contributory factors in a challenging situation, such as worry and stress caused by the illness, changes in everyday life caused by treatments, and the financial difficulties the families might face. The aim is to study the parents’ perspectives on how the social security system responds to these diverse challenges.
The study sample comprises families where the child has cancer. However, the results are also applicable to situations where families are faced with other illnesses or disabilities.
