Costs and benefits of rehabilitation

Published 28.1.2025Edited 5.3.2025

Focusing on perspectives that have received less attention, this project takes a look at how Kela rehabilitation clients have benefited from their rehabilitation. The study is part of a research project on the evaluation of the benefits of rehabilitation.

It draws on data from a register for reporting the efficacy of rehabilitation measures. The benefits of rehabilitation are examined in terms of the results of work and functional capacity measurements performed during the rehabilitation and by reference to how well individually set rehabilitation goals are achieved. Register data are also used to look at the benefits of rehabilitation for the clients’ work and personal lives. The study focuses on rehabilitation services that have not been included in earlier reports on the benefits of rehabilitation. Compared with previous studies, the study will take a longer-term look at the benefits of key rehabilitation services and examine the benefits in relation to costs. In addition to analysing the costs and benefits in parallel, the study will consider how the costs of rehabilitation should be examined in future studies dealing with the benefits and efficacy of rehabilitation. Finally, the study examines the views that parents have about parenting and the new family leave system, preparing the ground for an evaluation of the 2022 family leave reform. Targeted at around 4,000 mothers and fathers / second parents, the survey will be carried out electronically early in 2025.
