Pharmacotherapy Monitoring and Prescription Renewals
Long-term medication is a key form of treatment in many common illnesses. To achieve a good treatment outcome, the pharmacotherapy should be rational. Regular monitoring of pharmacotherapy is essential, and one central point for monitoring is prescription renewal. Renewing a prescription without seeing the patient may be a risk to rational prescribing, as research suggests that the monitoring of pharmacotherapy may not be optimal this way. Unnecessary or wrongly targeted pharmacotherapy reduces the success of the treatment and causes unnecessary costs to the reimbursement system, patients, and society. In recent years, changes have been made to prescribing practices, but there are no research data on the effects as of yet.
The aim of this study is to examine the experiences and expectations regarding the implementation of pharmacotherapy monitoring and the responsibilities of those involved in the monitoring from the perspective of the medicine user. The data are collected through an electronic survey targeted at My Kanta users of legal age, who are able to use the service independently and have requested a prescription renewal in My Kanta.
