Livelihood, Childcare, and Organising Everyday Life in Families After the Parents’ Separation

Published 1.1.2021Edited 7.3.2024

There are nearly 280,000 children and adolescents in Finland whose parents are separated. Many of them spend at least some of their time in both homes. The children’s living arrangements affect both the children’s and the parent’s right to social security and various services. In this project, we investigate the children’s living and maintenance arrangements in different situations (e.g., families receiving social assistance or housing allowance), parental participation in in the custody and care of the children after separation, and the effects of the living arrangements on the wellbeing of the children and their parents. Research data were collected by carrying out a survey targeted at separated parents of children of various ages in 2019.
