Long-Term Use of Sedatives and Hypnotics in Finland
Sedatives and hypnotics, i.e. benzodiazepines and hypnotics with similar effect, are a widely used medicine group in Finland. Yet, no previous research on the factors related to long-term use of these medicines has been conducted in Finland. The goal of this cooperation project, carried out by Turku University Hospital (TYKS) and Kela, is to study the effects of long-term use of sedatives and hypnotics on work ability and functioning, the factors behind the initiation and discontinuation of these medicines, and to examine the use of sedatives and hypnotics in large quantities.
This register-based study continues the group’s earlier register-based studies investigating the prevalence of use and long-term use of sedatives and hypnotics as well as factors contributing to long-term use. The results can be used to support the functioning of individuals using psychotropic medicines and when planning benzodiazepine addiction treatment.
The new information produced in the project also helps with developing treatment for those in the most vulnerable positions, i.e. individuals with mental health disorders, elderly population with long-term use of hypnotics, and those with addiction. With this new data, it becomes easier to focus on groups at risk for long-term use, prevent inequality, and support the promotion of work ability and functioning.
