Pharmaceutical Treatment of Persons With Developmental Disabilities in Finland From 2014 to 2018

Published 1.9.2019Edited 7.3.2024

The aim of this study is to analyse the medicine use and changes thereto among persons with developmental disabilities in 2014–2018. Additionally, the study seeks to update information on persons with developmental disabilities and the epidemiology of developmental disability in Finland. In the study, we generate nationwide data on persons with developmental disabilities by combining Kela’s register data on disability allowance and national pension with the data in the National Institute for Health and Welfare’s care register. We use Kela’s prescription register to study the prevalence of medicine use and the used medicines in persons with developmental disabilities and their controls of the same age. Furthermore, the generated data are used in a substudy investigating the housing arrangements of persons with developmental disabilities.

This study is carried out in collaboration with The Finnish Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, University of Oulu, University of Turku, and the Social Insurance Institution of Finland.
