Understanding Support Needs: Finnish Neurodivergent Young Adults’ Perspectives

Published 19.5.2026

Abstract

Meeting the support needs of neurodivergent young adults requires a better understanding of the perspectives of young adults themselves. The objective of this qualitative study is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the nature of support perceived as helpful, incorporating both social and individual perspectives. We interviewed 19 neurodivergent young adults. The data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. The analysis resulted in one overarching theme, three main themes, and six subthemes. The three main themes are: (1) I am competent and capable, (2) Tools and steps for my fulfilling life, and (3) From minority to majority.

This study indicates that professionals need to critically reflect their practices, interactions, and attitudes to ensure that they align with the preferences and values of neurodivergent young adults. The importance of group meetings lies in the opportunities to feel connected to others, share knowledge, and experiences through peer support.
