The Cost of a Shared Residence Child: Accounting for the Allocation of Child’s Costs Post-Separation in Finland With Reference Budget Approach

Julkaistu 22.1.2025

Tiivistelmä

The way a child's costs are distributed between parents post-separation may greatly alter how separation impacts a household's economic needs and the well-being of its members. As children more commonly live with both of their parents post-separation, discovering the distributional impact of shared residence on parents’ household costs and the level of shared residence child’s cost are of importance. With Reference Budget calculations from Finland, we find a nuanced impact on the costs of children depending on the age of the child, their living arrangement and whether the point of view is mother’s or father’s. These aspects should be carefully considered when assessing the impact of shared residence on households’ economic needs. Our findings provide a framework for the analysis of entitlement and benefit levels for shared residence families, as well as for accurately deriving poverty estimates for them.
